What is Luminaria?

On the evening of Luminaria, residents set luminaries on the sidewalks and walkways between their houses as a way to light the way between homes inviting friends and neighbors to travel from house to house while celebrating the season and enjoying each other’s company.

The celebration begins when neighborhood luminaries are lit at dusk, continues as people stroll (or bike) the Luminaria trail, and culminates in a community block party celebration where neighbors can connect, listen to music, enjoy food and support local vendors.

St Elmo residents and businesses can purchase luminaria kits (including bags, sand and candles) to light for the event. All proceeds from luminaria kit sales will be donated to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank. Over the past two years, we have been able donate over  $5000 to the Food Bank, providing over 10,000 meals for Chattanooga area families.
